my favourite december tradition

Updated: a few seconds ago

A personal note.

I've probably said this before, but fall is a fast and furious season for our family. Multiple birthdays and holidays fill each month, in addition to the seasonal experiences that only happen this time of year. December holds my favourite childhood memory: seeing The Nutcracker ballet when I was 8 years old. The musicality, costumes, and stunning dancers of @albertaballetcanada completely captivated me. So much so, I auditioned to join the annual production when I was 11, and had the opportunity to perform in it for 5 years.

As a mama, I dreamt about introducing my girls to this classic Christmas story, so beautifully told through ballet. It wasn't until last year, after returning to the barre and taking adult ballet classes at our local, preeminent ballet school, Nittany Ballet, that I learned of their annual Nutcracker performance. We made it a family occasion and It was just as mesmerizing as I remember. A new December and family tradition we couldn't to experience again!

This year, my husband and girls are even more excited for it because...I will be in the show! When Nittany Ballet asked if I was interested in performing in the party scene, I was ECSTATIC. Being back at the barre for the last 18 months has felt like returning to my roots, so the chance to get back on stage (in my 40's!) was one I could not pass up. Rehearsals have been a ball of fun with the fellow parents and ballet students. Nittany Ballet has exceptional teachers, incredibly talented dancers, and such a supportive environment. It really does feel like my home away from home.

what's your favourite tradition in December from childhood and do you still practice it today?

I love absolutely everything about The Nutcracker ballet, and am giddy with glee to get all fancy in makeup, costume, and jewelry for next weekend's show. If you've never seen this ballet, I encourage you to see if there's a company performing in your area. It's a timeless tale and delight for all ages, one that's sure to spark wonder and joy, and give you a moment's pause—amidst the usual frenzy that fills December—to remember the magical spirit this season brings.

Always,

jds
